 Aid Sleep

Study after study reveals what two-thirds of Americans already know. We are a sleep deprived nation. For many, our bleary-eyed existence stems from sacrificing sleep time in order to get more done. Other reasons for poor sleep include pain, hormonal changes, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, emotional stress, anxiety and depression. Since treating the underlying problem often results in improved sleep, begin with a medical evaluation.

If going to bed and getting up at the same time each day, winding down an hour before bed, sleeping in a 65 degree room and exercising regularly don’t bring enough relief, people begin reaching for sleeping pills. However, there are some botanical remedies that can gently lull us back to sleep. Here are a few popular products that are intended for short-term use.

  • Calm’s Forte.  Manufactured by Hyland’s, this remedy is favored by homeopathic practitioners. It is recommended for stress related sleeplessness but it can also be used during the day to relieve nervous tension. Take two tablets 30 minutes before bedtime. This dose may be repeated up to three times during the night for frequent wakening.

  • 5-HTP.  This supplement is used for mild depression and has the added benefit of deepening sleep. The standard dose is 50 mg, twice daily but it may be increased to 100 mg after two weeks if no results are seen. Avoid taking with antidepressants and Parkinson’s disease medication.

  • Ashwagandha.  Ashwagandha is commonly used by people with low stamina or who feel depleted by chronic stress. It also helps with mild anxiety and insomnia. Cycle 500-1,000 mg of pure root extract, twice daily for three months then take a two to four week break. This cycle can be repeated as long as needed. Avoid taking with sedatives or if you have an over-active thyroid.

  • Hops, Valerian and Skullcap. Many herbal sleep aids combine these three plants because they are known for their relaxing qualities. When blended into one product, their effectiveness is enhanced. Take one to two capsules at bedtime. Avoid taking with antidepressants, antihistamines, sedatives and blood thinners.

Nature’s medicine chest is stocked with natural sleep aides. Spending a little time investigating the best options for you can improve the quality of your slumber. Sweet Dreams.
